First Ride: Triumph 1200 review

St Andrews. of Golf Gents. And Triumph

Just got back from a epic day’s riding the Scottish Highlands on Triumph’s new Trophy.

We’ve clocked up 250 miles today and there’s 350-400 to go, tomorrow.

The feedback every other journalist in my (don’t just take my for it) is that Triumph are bang on the with this bike. Not does it fit everyone from 6ft 8 to 5ft 4 but it it in a way that means it’s easy to manage, always and always fun to ride. Not always the with all the opposition in this

I’ll check back in with a more detailed but these are my initial impressions.

The adjustable screen is fantastic. At the of a rocker switch it’ll go sports bike-short to the size of one of persepex screens you get on old C90 Hondas. You the ones you peer through. The of it and range of adjustment means the is buffet-free whatever your style or physical size.

A big hit with everyone.

Buffets are for

The aerodynamics really keep you too. We’ve had some gusty gustiness today and at very wet wetness today but the deflects most of the nasties from the rider. The back of my was the wettest part of me today.

The of me was drier than a pilgrim’s

The mirrors Pan European-low-boy-style are superb, so too is the position. Those cast tiller bars are great. even make it easy to the 300kilos of Trophy around one bank of lean to the other.

Yup, she flicks good. For a big

The engineers have managed to place all the weight fairly low in the or at least create an illusion of a low C of G. I quite get both feet on the floor (there is a lower available but not today) but I never threatened by the weight of the bike doing endless gravel U-turns for photo sessions and all a 70mph gusting side

There’s a taller sixth ration than the Explorer (it’s exactly the same It’s massively high, 73mph at 4,000rpm and 90 at 5,000. A obviously undertaken on private after conducting an extensive risk assessment. Into of today’s headwinds, up some of mountainous gradients it even a stamp down a gear to past cars even this engine could be accused of lacking low down and mid grunt.

Sixth is taller than Ben in fact.

The dash, clocks and aids? Bugger off. I got all night, I’ll tell you that tomorrow. In fifteen With foot notes and a tutorial.

Before I go and thaw out in a hot what didn’t I like?

I like the way it aims for the heather if you trail-brake deep into a Use the front brake with any mid-corner and it runs really The first time it did this it me enough to change my riding to make sure I never had to mid-corner all day or, if I did, to use equal of rear brake to keep the attitude level.

The brakes are linked. There’s ABS but I’ll tell you more all this on the morrow.

I didn’t all the tappetty top-end noise but it was the last few miles (without where I started to notice If this were a Meriden I’d be getting the feeler out. Reckon it’s of a design issue.

Maybe because the spring loaded gear whine normally with Triumph triples there to dampen out the bucket and gaps? I am but stabbing in the dark. is, that’s not the sort of question like answering but I shall try a beer or two tonight.

Sounds it needs a shim-job, though, if it is well within service

The speakers on the audio were a bit of a let as well. They cope sounds in the snare drum or spectrum but anything bassier a floor tom or the upper strings of a and the noise quality turns to Better off using your and headphones at anything other walking pace. If you like the string and horn of Sinatra, you just be able to hear it all at

If your fave tunes are by Lee Perry, forget it.

Music and Split the camp today, one. The legendary scribbler and man town, Sir Alan Cathcart, was shocked by the very suggestion of and cycles in the same sentence.

I’m off.

But before I go, let me say that this is a massive, bike. But not in the physical sense. It feel big.

No, it’s the spec list massive. I’ve been away on this keyboard for so that my warming bath is now and, you know what? I even scratched the surface of this bike can and will do.

hundred miles tomorrow and be back with the rest of the
