Triumph Sprint RS (June

Triumph has upspec’d its Sprint RS for with the new-generation 955i But there’s more to come the Brit company

Motorcycle last stint with Sprint RS was when we had one back in as a long-term test unit. By all it was an office favourite, with an argument over who was taking the for the weekend. That Sprint RS had back to Triumph by the time I my tenure at AMCN, so when a was offered at the recent 2002 RS national launch I eagerly the chance to see what I’d missing.

Along with its the Sprint ST, the half-faired Triumph RS has received the extra performance of the third generation 955cc triple powerplant for 2002.

In the RS is a leaner and meaner version of the ST, differing in lighter weight, set clip-ons that place a more weight bias on the with revised rake and that add up to more of a sportsbike than the ST sportstourer.

I reckon bikes usually look as the engine should always be the point of a bike, and you can still reasonable wind protection a smaller fairing.

The Triumph RS protects well, but I can’t say I love its looks. But then I didn’t like BMW’s S either when it first out — but now I do, so time will

Incidentally, the Triumph engine great with the black covers and the contrasting case much better than Japanese engines in …

The bodywork, suspension and the twin aluminium chassis are essentially from the one Mark Fattore back in February 2000 49 No 15), as it’s only the that’s benefited from changes in 2002.

The RS now has a 10ps to 120ps, largely gained by a cylinder-head with 1mm larger valves and 1mm smaller exhaust set at a narrower included angle. also an increase in compression 11.2:1 to 12:1.

On the fuel delivery side of new smaller injectors, now in larger throttle bodies, are controlled by revised engine mapping to a smooth and torquey power

Noise has been gained by relocating the to the lefthand side of the engine, a gear train, and the starter drive is now on the right with its train only turning the starter is actuated, not running all the as before.

It’s nice to see not rest on its laurels and pay attention to engineering improvements like as not only is there noise but benefits are gained in reduced loss along with the crankcase breathing that for a more efficient engine.

New exhaust headers, now with a pipe designed for even midrange torque, round out the modifications for the new 2002 engine.

claims the new engine is 2.5kg so with the new thinner radiator and the lighter fuel injectors the should be down. But the claimed of 199kg dry remains the same.

On the road all the traits of the Triumph triple engine are present, the three-cylinder burble and the linear power delivery makes the RS more of a sportsbike its looks suggest.

Our chosen route was out west from Australia’s Melbourne HQ along the numbing 60kmh and 80kmh the length of the so called Geelong then the scratchers delight of the Ocean Road to Lorne, to Forrest with fast corners and down from the to Apollo Bay.

With a long wheelbase of 1470mm a Suzuki TL1000R is only — I expected the Triumph to be in the very tight twisties, but it very well with no to understeer. The standard fitment BT020s were certainly up to the task.

Even though the suspension is basic, with only adjustment on the forks, preload and damping on the rear, it was well set up for the of uses I subjected it to.

The new engine is not powerful but very smooth, no discernable flat spots in the It was easy to hold a constant unlike some big-bore I’ve encountered.

I didn’t to rev it or change down to get good as it pulled well from low That’s always been a triple plus, but now it’s stronger.

the triple’s power exiting the open corners near was a buzz, and by this time swapped my standard mount for one up with the soft panniers, bellypan and the carbon performance

I would recommend every RS gets that muffler as it sure makes a difference, in the midrange. And that distinctive sound is just magic. I could ride past Mr on part throttle and he wouldn’t bat an

New for 2002 are the colour choices of yellow, my favourite, and jet black. is the lucifer orange of our long-termer.

not keen on the colour-coded bellypan not just for this bike but for all faired bikes. I think look a bit ‘cobby’ and hide the which is after all the attraction of a bike.

But I do like the quick-removal panniers ($415.00) that a nifty protection cover to them scratching the bike’s panels.

I can now see why wanted to take home the long-term RS. It’s powerful it counts in the midrange, very quite nimble for a big bike and feels smaller than it is on the

The new 120ps engine provides than enough power to put it of most of its competitors, such as the BMW S, which has 98ps, weighs and is priced at $17,950. The Triumph RS in at 199kg and is a bargain at $14,490.

Why sold more STs last than the RS I don’t know it must be that fairing.
