The Bike with the Sidecar from the Factory, the 2009 Ural Gear Up

The 2009 Ural Gear up is an interesting excursion for motorcycling; incorporating WWII-era styling and military looks with a modern air-cooled 749cc opposed-twin engine is only the beginning of the story. Where the 2009 Ural Gear up departs from even the feel of a retro motorcycle is the fact that this motorcycle could easily be a viable contender in the ATV market for hunters and fishermen who want a vehicle that’s small, maneuverable, has some storage space, and is entirely street legal.

The 2009 Ural Gear up answers concerns that off-roaders might have concerning taking their full-sized trucks off-road. There are just some places you can’t get to. The same goes for ATVs.

When it’s time to head home, the ATV’s capability stops at the street from a lack of legality. The 2009 Ural Gear up answers these questions quite simply with a trail-ready motorcycle that affords off-roaders true two-wheel drive in a motorcycle. There is an engagable shaft drive that operates the sidecar wheel, providing traction when you need it to get you over tough terrain. The advantage of the sidecar?

Bringing back your prize without having to lug it by hand.

The 2009 Ural Gear-up is built around an overhead valve air cooled four stroke flat twin engine that displaces 749cc and produces 40 horsepower at the rear wheel. 38 lb/ft of torque help the 2009 Ural Gear-up power up banks, plow through snow, rain, mud, or sand with equal ease, and in a touchingly vintage note, is started via either electric or kick starting. A four speed transmission with reverse brings you to the rated top speed of 62 miles per hour without too much fuss.

The 2009 Ural Gear-up is a ride that was certainly built not for highway use, but for back roads and trails. A five gallon fuel tank supplies plenty of go-juice for your adventures, though you’ll find that your fuel economy is slightly less than spectacular given the additional weight of the Ural sidecar. Overall weight of the 2009 Ural Gear-up is 739 pounds, still slightly less than some heavyweight cruisers, but at the same time quite large for the 749cc engine.

Chances are you won’t be winning any drag races on the 2009 Ural Gear-up. In front, a Brembo disc brake does stopping duty, while an IMZ drum brake is fitted to both the motorcycle’s rear wheel, and the sidecar wheel.

Perhaps an essential accessory only for hunters, fishermen, or those nostalgic enough to remember when military motorcycles such as the 2009 Ural Gear-up were utilized, the sidecar motorcycle is still something special that you don’t see every day. The 2009 Ural Gear-up is available in two paint schemes, both of the camouflage variety.

Forest or desert camo is the options for the 2009 Ural Gear-up, though if you must have a shiny color, others are available throughout the Ural lineup. Expect to pay around $13,599 for the 2009 Ural Gear-up.
