At the Vespa 3S Centre in Petaling Jaya.

Petaling Jaya, 5th February, 2013 – Naza Primera Sdn Bhd today officially unveiled the vivacious and stylish Vespa LX 150 Apple Edition at their Vespa 3S Centre . also setting an ambitious Vespa sales target for the next few years.

Present to officiate the launch were Datuk Wira SM Faisal, Naza Group of Companies Joint Group Executive Chairman and Mr. Nik Danial Nik Mahmood, Vice President of Naza Two Wheel Division.

At risk of disappointing some of you, the “Apple Edition” does not translate to collaboration with Apple Inc.; instead, it pays homage to the bitten-apple concept from a memorable 1969 Vespa advertising campaign.

All three VIP’s revealing the new LX 150 Apple Edition amidst the flock of reporters.

The now iconic campaign was fronted by the slogan “ Chi Vespa mangia le mele ,” which translates to “If you ride a Vespa, you take a bite out of the apple.” To Vespa, the apple symbolises “health, youth, summer fun and a ‘forbidden fruit’ of paradise – one that is attractive, nourishing and wanted by many.”

Now that we’ve set the poetic stuff aside, let’s talk about the functioning bits. From a mechanical point of view, this special edition LX 150 is identical to the original, meaning it is powered by the same air-cooled 150 cc four-stroke SOHC single-cylinder engine that generates 11.9hp and 11.8 Nm of torque through an automatic gearbox.

As is tradition, Datuk Wira having a go at the seat of the launched vehicle. It sorta looks apt, with his power suit and all.

With the help of all that raw power, the LX 150 races from 0-100km/h in…. well, never. Maximum speed is 95km/h, which sounds bad, but at least you’d be inching towards your destination while looking extremely stylish. Do note that Vespa’s are, and always has been, an urbanite.

One’s gotta admit; Vespa’s do look chic and perpetually fashionable. All these thanks to Renzo Spolti and Vittorio Casini.

Datuk Wira SM Faisal, Naza Group of Companies Joint Group Executive Chairman, said “The Vespa LX 150 Apple Edition combines youthful charm with the timeless quality of classic Vespas and is ideal for everyday urban commutes between home and the workplace or even simply for casual, leisurely rides. The 150cc engine delivers smoother power progression in the relentless stop-start conditions of a congested urban city.”

Vespa will be expanding its Malaysian operations with new 3S centres planned for Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Johor and Sarawak, while another model will be launched in September.

In case you were thinking of how the rear looked like. Vespa is wasp in Italian, and I think there’s still a hint somewhere in the updated design cues.

“My challenge to my team is simple – we want to put a Vespa in every Malaysian home by 2020,” Datuk Wira SM Faisal told reporters at the event. “We’re looking to grow Vespa in the region as well. We’ll be having more Vespa lifestyle related events in the future,” he added.

Those of you interested in joining the Vespa revolution, the LX 150 Apple Edition will be priced at RM11,388, with only 168 units made available. On top of that, in conjunction with the Lunar New Year, the standard LX 150 will be going for RM8,888. All these while stocks last, of course.

If you’re not into design, you won’t really know how desperately difficult it is to design something simple, stylish and functional. Fortunately, God gave us Italians.

For those who don’t really know what planet Vespa is from, two videos below illustrate their lifestyle approach to mobility (Editor’s note: I don’t know, but I found them to be a wee too corny).

Enjoy!

I got bored, so I took some cinematic-styled shots. Rather relevant to the event theme, I suppose.
