Classic scooter fans the world will be happy to see particular scooter back in the and more importantly, out on the road. three years after of the legendary Vespa PX ceased, the scooter manufacturer has performed a U-turn and resurrected the classic

As I’m sure most CSS will know, the PX was launched in 1977 as a 125cc scooter; 150 and models quickly followed. To the PX has sold over three units around the world and is a dependable workhorse for many, to its simple mechanics and reliable Modern automatic scooters may taken the place of this machine to a certain extent, but purists still have a spot for a geared metal

The Indian-built LML clone sold so after the PX was shelved (especially in that the Italians were to bring the true Vespa PX which is great news for us!

laws were the excuse for killing off this iconic but Piaggio has cleaned things up by a catalytic converter to the exhaust and a system to cut down on nasty The modifications sap a little bit of power, but as we all there are loads of aftermarket products and performance exhausts to bolt-on extra power if the requires it; simply swap the to get rid of the cat. The beauty of a simple fed engine (as opposed to a fuel motor) is that they’re enough for most owners to with at home rather having to get them plugged in to a diagnostics machine just to a simple fault.

I must to being a lifelong Vespa fan and owned a PX of one type or another 1987, so an invitation to the press in Rome was one ticket I was excited to I was glad to see that the new PX (both in 125 and has hardly changed from the production run.

Only minor styling set it apart, like the single horncasting (rather than a chrome grille), re-sculptured new Vespa emblazoned handlebar and floor mat and of course, the new exhaust. than that things are as were (better if anything) and a good thing as far as I’m

Piaggio has invested a few lira (or is it these days?) into tooling, so underneath the headset the is much better than it was the final few years of production. The is still built in Pontedera will probably surprise a few but the Vespa name is still to the bosses at Piaggio, so it will an Italian thoroughbred.

After a good look around the new the only areas I could would be the dull finish on the door lock and the age old seam on the which has always been to rusting (the T5 mudguard was a better solution). Other that, I was quite impressed; the of the glovebox had even been and so had the underside of the mudguard. Areas had started to get neglected before ended.

Although we were able to both capacities of the PX on the launch, the UK only be getting the 125cc. the 150cc also meets so there’s no reason for us not to get it over and if enough of you kick up a fuss, might just let our dealers a few. so start your campaigns!

The new model is available in colours, Rosso Dragon Mediterraneo Sky blue, Montebianco and Nero Lucido black. For my the red and white models look the and I expect they’ll be the biggest over here. Incidentally, the was well finished on our test and overall first impressions very favourable.

So what are the new scooters like to

The PX starts easily on the button, (or if you’re feeling extra and settles into a nice tickover. Thankfully the Vespa sounds just as good and as it always did, it’s the way for a Vespa PX to sound and any aficionado can one from half a mile while wearing a blindfold.

the scooter into the bustling traffic for the first time I a very minor flat which is probably due to the work to meet Euro3 emissions but other than that I was surprised at just how well the performed. Once on the move the PX 125 up speed quite quickly and do close to 60mph, although we have enough of a clear to thrash it for as long as we’d liked, but it certainly didn’t as heavily restricted as an LML. The will out accelerate the 125 and pull from it steadily, but there’s about 3 or 4mph difference at the top which is nothing to worry

Rome is a very busy and the roads are bumpy and covered in cobbles, but the PX took it all in its stride and flustered at all. The suspension better than I remember the older models, so I had no cause for there and the Michelin S83s a bad tyre. The PX will come a spare as standard as well; you had to pay for it at one time.

One thing you can’t appreciate (and can soon if you haven’t ridden one for a while) you ride the Vespa through a city is just how lightweight and it is.

You can fit it into the smallest gaps and your way through stationary or moving traffic with often without needing to dab a to the floor and in perfect control. It is a well balanced scooter, what people might you to believe about the engine offset.

If Piaggio was ever in any doubt as to the British public would this 34-year-old design or not, it’ll surely be to hear that the first of 220 scooters sold before even arrived in the UK and another 60 have one on order. That will clear within the few weeks, so don’t panic. But if like to get yourself a part of history, be sure to pay your Vespa dealer a visit

You won’t be disappointed.
