I have a 1973 Yamaha that I turned into a Straight pipes off the engine. I ride it, the engine begins to power and bogs down, and fires around 60 mph. with the throttle fully (A mechanic friend of mine put in a fuel filter and carb kit.) After it bogs and spits, it does it almost the ride home as if its …. and here and there. Once I get I pull the plugs and they are sometimes even burnt.

1974 TX500, high white smoke from tube HelloI have a regarding a 74′ Yamaha I have just had it serviced been sitting for 25 years). rebuilt, one new (used new) coil, and a cleaned gas tank.

The bike runs fairly but I’m having two problems. when the bike gets and warm, it idles to 4000 and come down for quite time, and when it does it Second, there is white with a gassy smell, a bit of it, coming from the cylinder breather tube located on the side, top, and back of the (routed down under the

Any ideas?

The idle problem is a fuel mix caused by an air leak in the system. Bad gaskets /seals on the manifold, bad valves, bad piston loose spark plugs, and bad gasket are all things that can the fuel/air mix. The smoke a need for new rings. I would the cylinders bored then new pistons and rings. Now finish the top end by getting a valve job.

You should get a liquid fuel liner to eliminate any rust in the future. Also, install an fuel filter. Google kreem fuel tank “ or go to www.http://www.4secondsflat.com/Fuel_Tank_Sealer.html

My complements on the cleaned carbs. Do the work above an you will effectively a new engine.

backfire thru carb and points and timing problem I instructions on setting the points and on a tx650 1973, can anyone me with this?

Okay, I tackle a tune up on a 36 year old Warning: I am 59 and haven’t touched bike since I was 23 and a mechanic at Yamaha in D.M. Iowa. bike has CV carbs and I know little on the carbs .

First let me you get a service manual. Go to www.repairmanuals.com and 1973 Yamaha 650 . You can choose a or a Haynes manual. I don’t for Clymer and have never a Haynes. The Haynes is $23.77 is really a pretty good considering not many of the manuals exist .

Also, for future reference, go to the site where you can see a parts for your specific bike. You select the brand, year, etc. once you go to the site. numbers and prices are also

Parts can be ordered if the price is no price = the part is not available.

Google motorcycle salvage and Google vintage yamaha parts .

Start with new NGK B8ES plugs. New points can be gotten at the site. Set the points at .015 max Hook a timing light up to the cylinder. Remove the left cover to expose the flywheel.

the bike and point the light at the reference mark on the casing. IF I CORRECTLY, rotate the base that the points are mounted on to the timing. The timing should when the engine is reved up.

If it the spark advancer needs Now put the light on the right cylinder. IF I CORRECTLY, changing the right point gap is the only way to set the timing for cylinder.

I hope this helps. rate my extra long Thanks.
