Birth of the BW’s

The year was when Yamaha Motor (YMCA) first introduced the all new scooter (named after Beach in Malibu, California), the to the BW’s.

This original was built in Japan, featured an reed-valve  two-… powerplant and had a funky style that big fat tires, a single seat and a body design that the traditional scooter mold. It was cool to ride a Zuma and it became an instant hit.

It was just a year later and a two-up scooter, with a seat and passenger footpegs. moved from Japan to the MBK factory (formerly Motobecane) in France.

It was also the beginning of a problem for Yamaha Motor The Zuma was hugely popular in so much so that MBK could not up with demand. The company to eliminate North American production at the end of 1990 in order to European demand.

Alas, after two short Canada became Zumaless — 1995 when it came as an early-release 1996 model. time around it brandished a new BW’s. Although the new name from the European model, it was a cost-saving measure, as the U.S. did not up the machine again until and it was deemed too costly to re-badge the model for Canada alone.

The BW’s has been very but without the bug eyes.

This the BW’s was here to stay, that curious apostrophe has and gone over the years.

Since its reintroduction, the BW’s 50 has a perennial best seller in Some readers may not be aware there are three provinces it is legal to ride a scooter the age of 14. One of those is Quebec, and the youth took to the BW’s like a to water.

During peak scooter Yamaha Canada was selling 4,000 units annually, and I seen numerous two-year-old scooters in Quebec with 20,000 km on the odometer. Let me tell these kids ride! So the time came to start the next generation BW’s, Canada had a rare voice in the process.

Does this MBK look familiar? The BW’s was at the French MBK factory for more a decade.

Product planners Japan, Taiwan and the U.S. a series of customer focus in Los Angeles, New York City and

Now in most cases, U.S. and planners share a lot of same direction, but with the BW’s were some issues; of the U.S. scooter customers are middle-age adults. In Quebec, a of scooter sales in Canada, owners are 14- to 17-year-old kids — and have a completely different set of

Interviews were held about 30 VIP customers in Quebec. were first asked their level of satisfaction their current scooter, and they were shown a of image sketches and asked to them from worst to The sketches ranged from design, to handlebars, headlights and capacity.

Needless to say, the variation between Canadian and customer comments complicated planning efforts.

A few weeks the interviews were completed, the department in Japan assigned as the official development code for the generation BW’s and it was game on.

A prototype differs a concept vehicle in that the is the first step towards whereas the concept is just a exercise that may never be This BW’s concept was at the Tokyo Motor Show in

A joint team of engineers Japan and Taiwan began together a running prototype for purposes. At this stage will “graph” the various together and produce a very Zero Stage prototype.

squeezed a liquid-cooled four-… an existing chassis.

In this they took the new four-… and fitted it into a modified chassis to get a sense of how the unit perform.

Once the prototype was a testing group became with the project and spent hours on the specially designed course, riding the unit in wet and dry and on smooth and rough pavement.

At point in development the test would be very rough and with loads of data equipment strapped to it.

The testers fed back their findings to the group, who then made the modifications. If the Zero Stage passed this level of then the engineers would work on the Stage 1 prototype.

Artists use a full-size clay to create the shape that eventually become the finished

If the Zero Stage prototype was not then meetings would be to determine the next course of up to and including cancellation of the project. As stage advanced, the prototype got to the final spec, using the parts that would comprise the unit.

After the passed the initial stages of the project was handed over to the department, where a clay was produced in a special studio resembles an artist’s workshop. The model gives the designers the to make changes in a short by adding or removing clay and it.

These “artists” manipulated the model until the final was achieved. The final clay was then scanned by a high-tech which records an incredible of data, which would be used to produce the dies for the actual body parts.

The BW’s looks quite when stripped of its bodywork. with the added complexity of a four-… engine, the 2012 weighs one kilo less the two-….
