Here’s a picture of my YZ490 It’s a 1984 model, a 1982 — the first — lower end/transmission at a bike salvage yard the original lower end’s gear broke and wedged the primary drive gears. That cracked the hell out of the cases.

So, I had it bored and put a fresh top end on an lower end, and so far have had no other than clutch

It’s 487cc, has reed-valve a 40mm Mikuni carb I may replace with a 36 or 38mm on how successful I am at attempting to jet it for clean running. It has a four-speed transmission ridiculously close ratios for but motocross. Once it’s high enough for road taking off in first will be taking off in second with the gearing. I predict some wear.

Maybe I’ll find the from an IT490 somewhere one of days.

The missing side plates were taken off due to warpage on the exhaust side and decay on the left. I may back with some rigid and use them, in turn, to back sort of saddlebags. That keep road spray out of my at least somewhat.

I built that attach to the triple-clamp bolts to carry the headlight and signals, which came off an 70s Kawasaki F-9 enduro 350. The signals, off the same bike, nicely to the frame tubes the seat, but had vibrated loose so I them off before I lost I will have to reinstall with some inner strips inside for extra or maybe a set screw.

Future plans include but are not to 1) building a bolt-on subframe, on mounts, (to carry the taillight, a rear cargo rack and the attachment points—with the vibration, all weight would probably the under-seat tubes); 2) building a muffler—my first attempt is the of a car muffler and somehow silenced the low and retained the high ones, so it like a big bee in a can; it’s here with a typical overpriced glass-packed aluminum motocross aftermarket unit I at buying several years

3) finishing installation of a charging horn, brake light and rearview mirror; 4) street-legal 5) building a custom seat my plastic seat base cracking all the way through.

Thanks for reading this, and for what is probably the coolest Web I’ve seen. I look to updates and find the discussion very interesting. It’s a environment to escape to now and again. Ben
