South Africa is – for whatever – big bike country, and as a result bikes seem to be relegated to the category.

This is has led to a number of gems slipping under the instead of getting the accolades deserve. One such a bike is the of this review: Yamaha’s but relatively unappreciated, FZ-6S

I bought my Fazer new in 2008 and used it daily for my 130 km commute Pretoria and Johannesburg. On weekends, it as my marshalling mount – as a Think marshal, I expect it to handle from sedate 50-km/h accompanying competitors in cycle to high-speed dashes for the next during motorcycle events the annual Motorcycle Toy Run.

Spending almost three per day in peak-hour traffic on the N1, ergonomics on a very important role for me. In department the Fazer fares the seat-to-footpeg distance seems for my 1.78 m frame, and the upright position makes for a very commuter bike.

Yamaha’s decision to endow the with a mildly detuned R6S motor was nothing less a … of genius. In doing so, have created a bike retains a lot of the performance of its sportier while giving it some mid-range punch (albeit in a small dose).

Not big on braking.

The characteristics of the engine gives the the feeling of being two bikes in At commuting speeds, it is an extremely bike that even the of riders will probably not intimidating.

However, once the spins past the 9 000rpm the other side of its character — the sound changes a restrained purr to a throaty while the numbers on the digital swap places with urgency.

Handling is on par with its thanks to its weld-free … aluminium frame that is much stiffer than a steel frame. The Fazer may not be an challenge for the sport bike set in the but it is never left too far behind.

Braking, on the other hand, is not the strongest point, despite the being upgraded for the 2007 year. However, this is not an issue during normal and it is only on the track that I myself wishing for more in the stopping department.

The FZ-6S model is probably the end of its lifespan; with Yamaha the down-spec FZ-6R in their line-up, I wouldn’t be surprised to the FZ-6S replaced by the bigger-engined 8 within the next year or so. If so, it bring a slew of used into the marketplace at very prices.

Should this do yourself a favour and grab You could do a lot worse than one of these highly underrated 600 cm3
