Yamaha XT660X — Supermoto

Road test by Percival

After riding an R1 for the previous couple of weeks in all of conditions and types of traffic I had an to swap over for a while the new Yamaha XT660X Supermoto. So some reservations I headed off on a day to Brooklands in Surrey to change Now Brooklands is just off the M25 so it’s that you will have to use of this horrible motorway to get but with traffic the way it was and the road on the main motorway I was glad in a way I used it as all the smaller roads to be in a state of gridlock!

I collected the XT and was informed ‘No don’t use it on the take the twisties!’, but with I had just ridden through I to take the M25 back for a short After checking over the and the controls I headed off through the and back toward the motorway, and just 5 miles under my a switch went on in my brain I had just turned into type of hooligan — bike is great, it’s the of bike that every should own, a bike for all and it just makes you smile.

Riding through the traffic is so and as I passed yet another supersports with the rider all hunched up over the bars I though of a short while before! the same route on the R1 was not nice, but on XT it was fantastic, let’s see how it goes on the coming up next.

The Yamaha seems to eat up most types of and roads, it’s versatile and to ride, you can have as much fun as you can have on any bike riding at speed limits and keeping licence safe. For 2004, the has been completely redesigned and now a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder motor a 100mm bore and 84mm The motor also features a piston running a compression of 10:1 in a ceramic-composite plated

A new fuel injection system a 44mm throttle body the all new SOHC, four-valve cylinder-head, and big-bore exhausts let the engine nicely.

The power delivery the XT is very snappy indeed, the delivery is pretty flat and just encourages you to get aggressive on the out of corners. You can get all the power available onto the ground without any fear, in fact I had the rear out of corners after a while I don’t usually do!) full control and had no worry Mr Highside paying me a visit.

This bike seems to all types of roads and every of road surface you care to at it, it stable on fast roads and tackle motorways for reasonable at well more than the limits. Not only that but as far as riding is concerned I did discover it is pretty resistant to buffeting trucks and buses making it an bike to commute on.

I did do a bit of commuting it into London for a few days, and as a I only used the M40 motorway Oxfordshire to get into the city, it was and comfortable. The XT 660X is definitely the of bike you could ride day, and you could have dream bike sitting in the for those other special

The XT660 gives you the feeling it is unbreakable when you ride it, an undemanding bike to ride but it has a distinct road presence, but as you will really have to one to understand what I’m about. On country roads and ‘A’ roads it can be pushed as as you like into corners and as far over as any current sportsbike any fear, I did actually manage to a peg down at one stage which be bad from a bike derived a dirt bike.

There are a lot of lightweight dirt that feel very and skittish on the road, but the XT660X more like a normal … road bike in you don’t get that feeling of from the steering and with the position and footpegs being as are it gives you a much more position than the usual style layout. As I said the power delivery comes in a way plants the rear wheel on the from very low revs up through the range, it’s smoother and crisper than the big-bore enduro and very in the mid range.

The XT uses a tubular frame with two upper tubes, the engine is utilised as a member, this results in a some 60% stiffer than its so Yamaha say. Both the and the X have the same 43mm forks, but the 660X is by far better on the due to being less soft and damped. To complete the road the X has some excellent Excel rims fitted, the front and 17 rims run sticky 120/70 and radial tyres.

In the braking dept the front is with a huge 320mm disc and a Brembo four-piston the combination certainly works and will haul you and the rear up very quickly indeed! have tuned the suspension for the and it works well, It’s not a dirtbike with road and tyres fitted, it’s a package. With the right on it you will definitely surprise a lot of bike riders on any country pursuit, not bad for a 48bhp bike!

If you a look at the Yamaha XT660X on the sheet then I doubt much whether you would it. On paper the XT factory supermotard look that good, it pretty much the same as the R1 and has between 1/4 and 1/3rd of the power. The cylinder motor develops a 48bhp and has to pull along a of 170kg (dry), it all looks a bike that will thrill and have no performance at

But ride one and think again..the will change your of this type of bike, a few minutes riding it you will realise that the fun factor is and the reason for this is. you just it on the stop everywhere you go, corners a thing of the past and you just like a maniac!!

The XTX is a really easy bike to through traffic and the city, and serious fun winding country in fact the narrower the roads the the XT gets! With the super sports road tyres, are incidentally designed for much power, you can put down all the power and lay it as far as you like.

Ride the XT at any corner and the throttle open like you on the dirt, it will steer and precisely around and accelerate out, it great fun and I don’t of many other bikes you can actually do that with! The soaks up all of the bumps and undulations in a way without throwing the bike and when you brake a little it doesn’t dive excessively.

a different sensation completely to of riding a middleweight bike a lot of this is due to the relatively high position. Never think you overstretch this bike, the throttle open and keep weight over the bars, if you you are going too fast or are over into a corner then it off a bit, the XT won’t bite then try again and lean it the corner as much as you like, it take it believe me!

The XT660X is a bike you can live every day. It’s not highly strung supermoto needs servicing daily, it vibrate you off the bike on every either, you can actually see through the at speed, and it’s comfortable for distances. It has all the benefits of a normal bike including (a bit of overkill in hazard warning lights! On a

No it really is a bike for everyone, you can it to work and you can take on the big boys at and that says it all in a nutshell.
