Yamaha YBR 125 vs Suzuki Sling Shot

‘Commuters in the battle field’ is something you would love to read from here. Entering the battle field our mission was to find which commuter proves to be a milestone when it comes to munching miles. Specifying the target I would say Yamaha YBR 125 and Suzuki Sling Shot.

The japans makers have revamped their 125 cc segment bike and this time it is with distinctive styling and new-fangled mane plates.

125 cc segment in India has always been green and both the Japan makes have realized the potentials of 125 cc bikes in India and has therefore shifted their goals once again towards this mass segment bike. Makers of this bike are however launching older versions with minor facelifts and upgrades. Both Suzuki Sling Shot and Yamaha YBR 125 would not be wrong if we say are inspired from Suzuki Zeus and Yamaha Gladiator.

The revised styling and array of features has however helped it to gain a few goodies in terms of sale.

Both the bikes although with smaller power plant offers its rider king-sized feel. Starting with the Suzuki courtesy I found Sling Shot to be more distinctive than Yamaha. The unusual odd look of the bike is not the regular choice of Indian bikers but will surely grab a lot of eyeballs once you hit the roads.

Coming to Yamaha I would rather say power of 125 and looks of 150. The monster bike impression that this bike sets on its onlooker is something unusual. The YBR 125 although flaunts very impressive body designs it fails to deliver that extra punch that is needed on Indian roads.

With a leg on each side of the bike Yamaha YBR 125 will definitely give you the feel of big bike. The man like handle bars from Yamaha has been distanced from the seat which makes the overall ride more macho. The bikini fairing on Yamaha YBR 125 that has been crafted nicely on instrument panel makes it look more hefty and handy.

Muscular fuel tank that has got added extensions on both the sides makes it look more offensive. With this hefty feel you can definitely bet this bike to be worth the price you are paying.  The neatly crafted instrumentation on Suzuki Sling Shot that houses the speedometer, fuel gauge, turn and gear indicators makes it more handy as well.

The clock  motivated speedometer is just as if you have been gifted with something age old. Although you may find the instrument console more compact as compared to Yamaha YBR 125, but to be more precise Yamaha YBR 125 flaunts a conventional instrument console that lacks the style factor. Suzuki has shown a further way of styling commuter bikes. The fit and finish of Suzuki Sling Shot is something up to the mark.

While Yamaha YBR looks bulky but lacks the style quotient that has to be there in this century bike. The upswept exhaust and sporty mag alloy wheels that has been caked with black treatments scores Suzuki Sling Shot maximum stars. Yamaha YBR 125 lacks black treatments and black caked alloy wheels which ranks it to the just commuter category.

Ride Impressions

the seating impressions and ergonomics in Yamaha YBR 125 is far better than that of Suzuki SlingShot. The commuter bike feel is definitely a turn of in this bike. While Suzuki Sling Shot offers you something more. Commuter inspired handlebars and forward positioned foot pegs on Suzuki Sling Shot gives it more sporty feel.  Considering the presentation factor I found the seating in Suzuki Sling Shot more oomph.

Suzuki Sling Shot that incorporates engine kill switch, gear indicators and pass light makes it more user friendly bike in the 125v cc segment. I found the overall setup in Sling Shot to be more applauding that is from thumb the starter to gear shift torquey pull. Although YBR flaunts engine kill switch and pass light it lacks something that was more important especially for beginner level riders. The disc brakes equipped on the front tyres makes Sling Shot stand out in this comparison.

The refined engine from Yamaha has crossed the performance finish lines that make it more responsive to its abilities. Zippier acceleration that Suzuki delivers to its buyers is something that Yamaha YBR lacks in it. Sling Shot with its ultimate ride and performance will impress very commuter bike lover in India.

The friendly nature and seating position is something putting your bet on. With dark horse performance on busy Indian traffics you may find weaving and maneuvering much more easy as compared to Yamaha YBR 125. I found the overall ride impression of Yamaha YBR 125 lazier. The NVH (noise, voice and harshness) of the engine is pretty good than Suzuki which fails on higher RPMs. The Gladiator inspired YBR shares many identical features and ride impressions as of Gladiator.

Yamaha could have worked on making the overall ride experience more thumping. Yamaha YBR 125 lacks the sharp edge and aerodynamics as of Suzuki Sling Shot and this way Suzuki achieves more star when you consider the overall ride. Yamaha although performs overwhelmingly when it comes to Indian road cruising.

With advancements in suspension and chassis you can bet this Yamaha to be more worthy when it comes to jolt free ride experience. YBR has proved itself once again with maintaining lesser vibrations at the red lines on the speedometer. Electric start is offered as standard feature in both the bikes which gives easy starting in all most any weather conditions.

The top most speed attained by Yamaha was 94 kmph and that was with ease, while Suzuki with mush efforts managed to attain atop speed of 89 kmph. Yamaha YBR125 and Suzuki Sling Shot share the same suspension system that is Telescopic forks at the front while at the rear swing arm box section that has been coupled with hydraulic dampers.  Custom built chassis from Yamaha expertise gave this bike cut end cornering abilities which is rarely found in commuter bikes.

Comparing straight line performance you can expect this macho to be more efficient than Suzuki. Suzuki Sling Shot, weather it is straight line or twisting corners came with disappointing results and this was something not expected from Suzuki.

On wavy Indian roads you may not find Suzuki Sling Shot to be that promising and hence I would say if you are looking for a commuter with par performance then jump in for Yamaha YBR 125.The foot pegs and footrests in Yamaha are slightly above the mark than Suzuki Sling Shot and proves its rider as well as the pillion with king sized ride experience. Yamaha and Suzuki both come with Split seats which are impressive and provide better space for rider and pillion and this definitely proves helpful when it comes to long distance journey.

Yamaha YBR 125

Yamaha Promises you a wider note when it comes to city as well as highway road conditions but Suzuki only makes it in city roads. The suspension system used in Suzuki was throwing me on the crimped Indian roads while on higher rpms. The ergonomics and knee recess was pretty much satisfactory in both the bikes. Yamaha YBR 125 however due to its enhanced suspension and fine crafted chassis heads straight to the finish line.

Considering the braking abilities Suzuki Sling Shot with disc brakes at the front gives this bike better braking abilities.

Suzuki Sling Shot in India is assembled with a single cylinder, 2 valve, air cooled power mill, that is capable of engineering 8.8 hp at 7000 rpm and peak torque of 10.0 Nm at 3500 rpm. This hammering Torque from Suzuki made it better performer in the war of commuters. This power plant from Suzuki was mated with 5 speed manual transmission.

The smooth flow of gear system impressed me while with Yamaha it was bit to lazy to respond.

Yamaha YBR 125 in India is powered by 123.0 cc displacement, single cylinder, 2 valve, air cooled engine. YBR 125 is capable of producing thumping power of 10.08 hp and peak torque of 10.04 Nm, which is actually more than Suzuki power plant. Here again the engine is mated with 4 speed manual transmission.

Coming to the acceleration chart Suzuki was capable of chasing naught to 60 kmph in 7.3 seconds while Yamaha managed to attain naught to 60 kmph in 6.4 seconds. Although it sounds unusual that Yamaha delivers more fuel efficiency than Suzuki, but in the case of commuters this is actually true. Yamaha YBR 125 delivers a healthy fuel efficiency of 58.1 kmpl while Suzuki Sling Shot delivers 56.8 kmpl. That is 2 kmpl less than Yamaha.

13.6 litres of energy drink saving capacity in Yamaha which is the same as it was in Yamaha gladiator will assure you of greater cruising experience. This way with such healthy fuel efficiency and hefty fuel tank, you need have to stop at every petrol pump that comes in your way. Suzuki Sling Shot has got 12.0 litres of fuel tank which is just average.

Yamaha YBR 125 reaches its destination of naught to 60 kmph in almost a second less than Suzuki and then reaches the milestone of 80 kmph 4 seconds in prior than Suzuki Sling Shot. However if you mull over the engine characteristics you may find Sling Shot to be quicker and responsive. Suzuki has got marvelous pick up which is lacking in Yamaha.

Pushing the throttle to the extreme red line you ay have clear view of Yamaha making it. In the race of par performance the 5 speed transmission from Suzuki didn’t help much and you may find Yamaha to be performing out of the box with its 4 speed manual transmission. To die for performance from Yamaha has made it the king in the commuter bike segment.

Yamaha YBR 125 price in India is rupees 52,000 while Suzuki Sling Shot price in India is rupees 50,740. With such competitive sticker price tag from both the players you may find Yamaha YBR 125 to be more worthy of what you are paying for.

Yamaha YBR 125 is a complete package that performs far in a better manner than Suzuki Sling Shot. Short distance ride is convincing with Suzuki. I would rather prescribe fun lovers in the commuter segment to settle in for Suzuki Sling Shot. But if you are looking for a ore reliable machine then pack in the deal with Yamaha YBR 125. Suzuki definitely gives you the urge for more power and ride feel but with Yamaha YBR 125 you have it inbuilt.

Suzuki Sling Shot will definitely grab a lot of eyeballs with its distinctive looks but with Yamaha you will be looked as a rider with par confidence. Riding impressions with Yamaha YBR 125 is more convincing than Suzuki Sling Shot. If your question is which bike for commuting in the 125 cc segment, then my answer would be Yamaha YBR 125.
